How I became interested in American Sign Language

I was first introduced to sign language while I was receiving my bachelor's degree in psychology at the University of North Texas in 1998. I took sign language as my foreign language and fell in love with it. After graduation I moved back to Austin and began work in our family business as an office manager. In 2005 my husband and I made the decision to sell our house and move to Plano, Texas. With this move I felt that it gave me the opportunity to pursue a different career path. When I looked back on my life I realized that the thing I was most interested in pursuing was sign language. I researched Interpreter Training Programs and decided to enroll at Collin County Community College. In 2006 I took the BEI Texas Certification Test and received my Level One Certification and in 2009 I was awarded the BEI Advanced Certification. I am now working as a sign language interpreter in the Dallas area.

Do you need a sign language interpreter?

The job of a certified sign language interpreter is to facilitate the communication between people who can hear and people who can not. My goal as a sign language interpreter is to create an experience that is straightforward and comfortable for my clients, both hearing and Deaf. I strive to foster an atmosphere of mutual respect with an emphasis on clear communication. In order to better serve my clients I will continue to attend workshops and increase my qualifications and experience at every opportunity.
